Penetration Testing for SaaS Platforms Multi-tenancy, APIs, SSO — tested by humans, accelerated by AI

Australian SaaS platforms get hit by a specific attack pattern: cross-tenant data access, broken authorisation in APIs, IDOR in record lookups, SSO bypass, and webhook abuse. None of these show up in scanner output. All of them show up in the breach reports.

What is SaaS Penetration Testing?

SaaS penetration testing is a manual security assessment specifically focused on the failure modes SaaS platforms share: multi-tenant data leakage, broken authorisation in APIs, IDOR (insecure direct object references), SSO and OAuth abuse, webhook tampering, and business-logic flaws in subscription, billing or workflow logic.

TL;DR

What is SaaS Penetration Testing?

SaaS penetration testing is a manual security assessment specifically focused on the failure modes SaaS platforms share: multi-tenant data leakage, broken authorisation in APIs, IDOR (insecure direct object references), SSO and OAuth abuse, webhook tampering, and business-logic flaws in subscription, billing or workflow logic.
A SaaS pentest is different from a generic web app pentest because the threat model is different — the same software serves hundreds of separate customers, so the question isn’t only ‘can an attacker break in’ but ‘can a paying customer see another paying customer’s data’. Penva Security’s SaaS engagements test exactly this, and produce a single audit-ready report aligned to ISO 27001:2022 Annex A.8.8 and SOC 2 Trust Services CC7.1.
SaaS Threat Model

How SaaS Platforms Actually Get Breached

Public breach reports show a small set of attack patterns recurring across SaaS — different from generic web app threats. We test for each one explicitly.

Cross-Tenant Data Access

The most expensive SaaS bug. Customer A logs in, manipulates an ID in a request, and reads Customer B’s records. Common in record lookups, exports, audit logs, and shared resources. Almost always a logic flaw, not a configuration issue. Penva Security’s testers spin up multiple test tenants and chase every cross-tenant access path.

Broken Object-Level Authorisation (BOLA / IDOR)

Sequential or guessable IDs in REST endpoints, GraphQL queries, S3 keys, or signed URLs. OWASP API Top 10 #1 every year since 2019. Penva Security tests every authenticated endpoint with low-privilege accounts trying to access high-privilege resources.

SSO / OAuth Flow Abuse

Misconfigured SAML signature validation, JWT vulnerabilities, OAuth redirect abuse, scope escalation, token replay. Increasingly common as SaaS platforms federate with customer IdPs. We test every SSO and OAuth path with custom payloads.

Business Logic Abuse

Coupon stacking, plan downgrades that don’t restrict access, role changes that don’t propagate, free-tier limits that can be bypassed. These pass automated testing because they’re not ‘vulnerabilities’ in the technical sense — but they cost real money.

Webhook & Integration Attacks

Server-side request forgery via webhook URLs, signature bypass on webhook delivery, abuse of OAuth-connected third-party apps. SaaS integrations are a growing attack surface as platforms add Zapier-style ecosystems.

API Versioning & Legacy Endpoints

Old API versions left running with old vulnerabilities. Deprecated endpoints with weaker authorisation. We map your full API surface — not just the current version — and test what’s actually reachable.
Engagement Scope

What a Typical SaaS Engagement Covers

Scope adjusts to your stack — but these are the assets that consistently produce findings on SaaS engagements.

01

Web Application

Customer-facing app — authentication, session management, authorisation matrix, input validation, output encoding.
02

REST & GraphQL APIs

Full OWASP API Top 10 coverage — BOLA, broken authentication, excessive data exposure, mass assignment, GraphQL introspection abuse.
03

Admin / Tenant Console

Tenant management, user provisioning, role assignment, audit log access. Privileged routes are tested separately from customer routes.
04

SSO & OAuth Flows

SAML signature validation, JWT handling, OAuth client configuration, IdP trust boundaries, account-linking flows.
05

Multi-Tenant Isolation

Cross-tenant access attempts with multiple test accounts. Database isolation testing where access permits. The high-value finding.
06

Cloud Infrastructure

AWS / Azure / GCP configuration relevant to the application — exposed buckets, IAM weaknesses, metadata abuse, container escape if applicable.

FAQ

SaaS Pentest — Common Questions

Direct, industry-specific answers to the questions SaaS buyers ask most often. Updated May 2026.

Why does SaaS need a different pentest from a regular web app?
The threat model is fundamentally different. A regular web app has one customer base — yours. A SaaS platform has hundreds of separate customer tenants sharing the same code and database. The question isn’t only ‘can an attacker break in’ but ‘can Customer A see Customer B’s data, and can a paying user escalate to admin?’ The OWASP API Top 10 #1 (Broken Object Level Authorisation) is the single most common finding on SaaS engagements — and it’s specifically a multi-tenancy problem.
Can one engagement produce both ISO 27001 and SOC 2 evidence?
Yes — and this is the most common Penva Security SaaS engagement. ISO 27001:2022 Annex A.8.8 / A.8.29 and SOC 2 Trust Services CC7.1 / CC6.1 require overlapping but not identical evidence. We design scope, methodology and reporting to satisfy both in a single test cycle, which saves you running two engagements per year as your audit cycles diverge.
How long does a typical SaaS engagement take?
5 to 10 business days of active testing for a single SaaS app + API with 2 to 3 user roles and SSO. Plus 1 to 2 days for reporting. AI-accelerated reconnaissance compresses what was a 3-week engagement five years ago — testers focus their time on multi-tenancy and business-logic exploitation, not technology fingerprinting.
Do you test in production or in staging?
Usually staging, with a production environment that mirrors live data shape. Multi-tenant testing specifically benefits from a staging environment where we can spin up multiple test tenants without polluting customer data. Production testing is supported for non-destructive engagements and is the default for read-only API testing.
How do you test multi-tenant isolation without test accounts?
We require multiple test tenants — typically 3 to 5 — provisioned before kickoff. Each represents a different customer with different roles and permissions. We then systematically attempt cross-tenant access from each tenant against every other, across every authenticated endpoint. This is the highest-yield part of a SaaS engagement and cannot be skipped.
Do you test our APIs as well as the web app?
Yes — and on most SaaS engagements the API surface produces more findings than the web app. We test REST and GraphQL APIs against the full OWASP API Security Top 10, with particular focus on BOLA, mass assignment, excessive data exposure, and broken function-level authorisation. GraphQL gets specific treatment for introspection abuse and query depth.
Will US enterprise buyers accept a Penva Security report for SOC 2?
Yes. Penva Security reports follow the structure US enterprise auditors and procurement teams expect — methodology aligned to NIST SP 800-115, PTES and OWASP, CREST-certified testers, executive summary, technical detail, CVSS scoring, and remediation guidance. SOC 2 auditors specifically look for testing performed by qualified independent testers, which is exactly the engagement model.
Can you test continuously as we release weekly?
Yes — Pay-As-You-Go from A$500/week for high-velocity SaaS teams. Same CREST-certified testers, same methodology, but consumed weekly via direct Slack / Teams collaboration. Test new features as they ship rather than annually. Compliance engagements still run as fixed-price project deliverables for the audit cycle.
